Mr. Smart has significant experience in economic and litigation consulting.  He has quantified damages and determined reasonable royalties and lost profits in connection with patent infringement and antitrust litigation, tortious interference, labor disputes, and trade secret misappropriation.  Mr. Smart has testified as an expert witness in patent infringement litigation in U.S. District Court.  He also has attended several trials at U.S. District Court, as well as an arbitration in the United Kingdom involving the valuation of commercial real estate.  Mr. Smart’s consulting experience covers a variety of industries, including semiconductor and computer technology, mobile banking technology, cellular technology, medical devices, energy, real estate, and public finance.

Outside of litigation, Mr. Smart has conducted economic research and economic impact studies in the sports and entertainment industries, including economic impact studies of the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Prior to joining Micronomics, Mr. Smart managed electricity generation R&D projects at the California Energy Commission and researched economic indicators at Econoday, Inc., a provider of economic data and analysis to investors and financial professionals at the Wall Street Journal, Bank of America, Nasdaq, and others.

Mr. Smart received a Master of Science degree in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  He received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in Economics and Slavic Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he was the recipient of the Randell Magee Award.
